Mechanism of polyphenols from traditional Chinese medicine against diabetic nephropathy by modulating AGE-RAGE signaling pathway:a review

Abstract:

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM),and its pathogenesis is complex and involves multiple pathophysiological processes.The advanced glycation end product (AGE)-receptor for AGE (RAGE) signaling pathway is a key signaling pathway in the occurrence and development of DN,which can activate downstream signaling,triggering oxidative stress and inflammatory responses,and further aggravating renal damage.Recent studies had shown that polyphenols such as quercetin,kaempferol,myricetin,baicalein,baicalin,wogonin,kaempferitrin,rutin,curcumin,resveratrol,and epigallocatechin gallate,can play a therapeutic role in the treatment of DN by regulating the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway and hold promising prospects for future drug development.Although there are numerous studies in vivo and in vitro on the prevention and treatment of DN using polyphenols from traditional Chinese medicine,there is a lack of review specifically addressing the intervention of the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in DN.Therefore,this article summarizes the mechanisms of the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in DN in recent years and the research on the intervention of polyphenols in DN,in order to provide references for analyzing and explaining its molecular mechanisms and developing drugs for the treatment of DN.
