Abstract: To study the effect and mechanism of the ethanol extract from Pteridium aquilinum on lowering uric acid and renoprotective function, the mice model of hyperuricemia was established by oxygen hydrochloride acid potassium salt. The ethanol extracts of P.aquilinum were continuously i.g. administered once a day to the mouse model for one week. One hour after the final treatment, the urate levels in serum and the hepatic xanthine oxidase (XOD) activity in serum and liver were tested to explore the mechanism of anti-hyperuricemia.After the model mice were i.g. administered with the ethanol extracts of P.aquilinum for one week, the creatinine (Cr) and urea nitrogen (BUN) levels in their serum,as well as the NO,and ET levels in their renal tissue and the histopathology of kidney were tested to investigate the effect on renal function. The results indicated that P.aquilinum ethanol extract can significantly lower the urate and Cr levels in the serum and the BNU and ET in renal tissue of model mice,respectively.P.aquilinum ethanol extract can also elevate the NO levels in renal tissue while showed no effect on the kidney histopathology.Hence,it was concluded that P.aquilinum ethanol extract can reduce the urate level in serum and protect renal function, the mechanism of lowering uric acid was not through the route of common intervening the activity of xanthine oxidase.
