Roots of Lantana camara: Chemical Constituents and HIV-1 Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitory Activity

Abstract:

Among the 25 fractions obtained from the alcohol extractive of the roots of Lantana camara L.(Verbenaceae) by silica gel column chromatography, three fractions demonstrated inhibitory HIV-1 reverse transcriptase activity. Furthermore, six pentacyclic triterpenes were isolated by reduced pressure column chromatography and identified as oleanonic acid(1), liquidambaric lactone(2), lantadene A(3), lantadene B(4), oleanolic acid(5), and 25-hydroxy-oleanolic acid(6) by spectral analysis. Compounds 2 and 6 were reported firstly in the plants of Verbenaceae family, and the structure of 6 was confirmed firstly by X-ray crystallography.
