Abstract: To study the chemical constituents and their anti-inflammatory activity from the stems of Strophanthus divaricatus, thirteen compounds were isolated from its ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract by using chromatographic techniques including silica gel,Sephadex LH-20 etc.Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis as hederagenin (1),(-)-loliolide (2),(3S,5R,6S,7E)-3,5,6-trihydroxy-7-megastigmen-9-one(3),(3R,6R,7E)-3-hydroxy-4,7-megastigmadien-9-one(4,(+)-pinoresinol (5),epipinoresinol (6),4,4′-dihydroxy-3,3′-dimethoxybenzophenone (7),6-hydroxynaringenin (8),scosolrtin (9),6,7-dimethylesculetin (10),indazole (11),vanillic acid (12),and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (13).Compounds 1~4 and 6~13 were identified from this plant for the first time.Compound 5 showed a significant inhibition on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells with IC50 value of 18.09 ± 1.09 μM.
