Abstract: The damage of ultraviolet radiation to organism becomes more and more serious, and it has caused considerable concern for people. There are many advantages for Cyanobacterium to be used in studying the effects of UV-B on living organisms because of its unique status in biological evolution and importance in ecological system. Now there are fewer reports about the researches concerned with the effects of UV-B on cyanobacterium and as a result the paper introduce the concerned domestic and international researches in this field, which include effects of UV-B on the biomass, the physiological effects, especially on the photosynthetic systems, put emphasis on the UV-absorbing compounds in cyanobacteria, and further discusses the application of these compounds at home and abroad.

Key words: Cyanobacteria, UV-B, UV-absorbing compounds, MAAs, Scytonemin
