Abstract:

This study aims to explore the application value of the flowers of Cinnamomum camphora,Ligustrum japonicum,Abelia × grandiflora,Mahonia bealei, and Vitex agnus-castus.The volatile compounds of above five flowers were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using headspace dynamic sampling and thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The aroma intensity and aroma characteristics were further evaluated in combination with the odor activity value (OAV).The results showed that the aroma release intensity and OAV of the C. camphora flowers were much higher than those of the other four plants.Flower aromas of C. camphora and M. bealei exhibited a floral fragrance. The main components of the former were camphor and linalool, while the main components of the latter were cis-β-ocimene.Benzaldehyde and phenylacetaldehyde were the main components of the flower volatiles of A. × grandiflora and L. japonicum, which showed a sweet fragrance. The flower fragrances of V. agnus-castus showed complex aroma characteristics, with its main components being acetate esters and sabinene. The flower volatiles of the five types of trees and shrubs had high contents of health-care ingredients with anti-anxiety,anti-inflammatory,and antibacterial functions.Especially, the flowers of C. camphora that provide strong olfactory stimuli have promising potential applications in health gardens and aromatherapy. In future research, the application value of the flowers as mentioned above can be further explored by extracting their volatile oils.
